Blue Mountain Farm is a small, family-owned homestead on the outskirts of Hedgesville. The farm was established two centuries ago by Peter Speck, who moved to the area from southeast Pennsylvania with his family in 1814. Historically, the farm was known as Speck Spring. It was operated by successive generations of the Speck family over the next 186 years, first as a subsistence farm and then as a dairy, an orchard and as a general crop farm that served its neighbors and residents of the surrounding area. Dave Elliott and Sue DeVall purchased the 11-acre homestead core in 2000 and have continued the tradition of serving their local community. The farm follows sustainable, organic principles to produce a wide variety of vegetables, greens and melons. It uses regenerative, no-till practices to preserve the land’s rich, deep soil and, in the process, capture and sequester the atmospheric carbon that is causing climate change. The farm participates not only in the St. Isidore market, but in weekend markets in Charles Town and Shepherdstown. It also offers Community Supported Agriculture programs. Dave can be contacted by email at bluemf2015@gmail.com.
